Kids are heading back to school in this area this week and next and the Pine Hills community is coming together to prepare them.
One effort, sponsored by The Sanctuary Church and the Central Florida Urban League, will be held on Saturday, August 9, at the Wayne Densch YMCA. Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It’s called “Steps in the Right Direction” and organizers plan to give students free tennis shoes, school supplies, physical exams and hair cuts – while supplies last. The event, in its second year, is for students in grades K-12. The student’s parent or guardian must be present to register their child/children on the day of event.
Pastor Justin R. Felton, of The Sanctuary Church, said in a radio interview that parents should bring some proof that their child is in school, such as the child’s last report card or school identification card.
In addition to the giveaway, Felton announced that representatives from Sears will be on hand to accept applications to fill 100 jobs. So people, parents especially, looking for jobs should show up as well. There will also be more than 20 organization there, offering resources to help families, Felton said.
The Wayne Densch YMCA is located at 870 N. Hastings Road, Orlando, FL 32818.
